Sometimes items that are used can have a poor stigma attached to it, such as not being in good working condition anymore or being on its way out. I always like to remind people of a saying we all hear but sometimes forget, “They don't make things like they used to.” Well this is very true when it comes to the appliance industry as a whole.
New appliances can be extremely expensive and at the same time the average life expectancy for a new appliance is about 6-8 years . Can you imagine spending thousands of dollars on new appliances just for them to break 6 years later and some even less. Many people ask how is this possible? They say things like, “My parents have had the same washing machine at their house since I was 4 years old!” Interestingly enough, this person is now in their late to early thirties!
Due to higher fuel cost and the push for corporations to increase their bottom dollar, this has caused the production of refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, stoves, dishwashers and microwaves, along with many other appliances, to be made with cheaper parts and components. These manufactured parts are not as durable as the ones that were made twenty years ago.
If you’re building a new home or you are a realtor selling a house, there are many used appliances that will look great and there are brands out there that will withstand the test of time as well! Speed Queen for example has a 20-25 year life expectancy for their washers. You will be paying close to $1000 for this unit, however in the long run, it would be cheaper than buying the new $499 special that will break in 4 years.
